Shoemakers were important craftsmen for Nauvoo in the 1840s. This small 16-by-16 foot home and shop were completed in 1843, at which time George and his brother set up a shoemaker shop on the first floor. A pair of finished shoes cost $1.75, and boots cost $5.00. They called themselves “Riser’s Cheap Boot and Shoe Manufactory.”
