Mail arrived in Nauvoo about three times a week, by steamboat and stagecoach. Because it was sometimes lost or stolen, residents often sent two or three copies of important correspondence. Postage was expensive, so recipients were frequently asked to pay for the letters they received, but cash was scarce so many letters were never delivered.
