Originally built of locally quarried gray limestone, the Nauvoo Temple construction required more than five years of hard work and significant sacrifice. Over this five-year period, from 1841 to 1846, the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day worked on their homes, shops and farms, but the principal building emphasis centered on completion of the House of the Lord.
