When early church members acquired Nauvoo in 1839, a log home—later named the Homestead— was constructed on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. This structure served as Joseph and Emma Smith’s first home until the Mansion House was completed. In 1858, Joseph Smith’s son, Joseph Smith III, returned to the Homestead—the oldest house in Nauvoo—and completed a final addition where he could raise his family.
